RESUMEN

Exopolysaccharide produced by lactic acid bacteria has various functions. In the present study, one anti-oxidant polysaccharide fraction, namely S1-EPS, was extracted and purified from Pediococcus acidilactici S1, and its structure and its potential effect on the gel properties of fat substitute meat mince were investigated. The results showed that S1-EPS, one of homogeneous polysaccharides, was mainly composed of Gal, Glc, and Man in molar ratio of 7.61: 15.25: 77.13 and molecular weight of 46.975 kDa. The backbone of EPS-S1 contained →2,6)-α-D-Manp-(1→,→2)-α-D-Manp-(1→,→3)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → and a small amount of→6)-ß-D-Manp-(1→. The linkages of branches in EPS-S1 were mainly composed of α-D-Manp-(1→ attached to a sugar residue →2,6)-α-D-Manp-(1→O-2 or ß-D-Galp-(1→ attached to a sugar residue →2,6)-α-D-Manp-(1→O-6. Furthermore, as S1-EPS increased, the meat minced gel pores decreased, and the surface became smooth. A remarkable inhibitory effect on the lipid oxidation of meat minced gel was found as S1-EPS concentration increased. Overall, S1-EPS was found to have substantial potential in low-fat meat products by serving as a natural, anti-oxidant, and functional additive.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the intracerebral abnormalities of hemodynamics in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) through arterial spin labelling (ASL) technique with multi-delay ASL (MDASL) and conventional single-delay ASL (SDASL) protocols and to verify the potential clinical application of these features for the diagnosis of PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Perfusion data of the brain obtained using MDASL and SDASL in patients with PD were compared to those obtained in healthy control (HC) subjects. Intergroup comparisons of z-scored cerebral blood flow (zCBF), arterial transit time (zATT) and cerebral blood volume (zCBV) were performed via voxel-based analysis. Performance of these perfusion metrics were estimated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and compared using Delong test. RESULTS: A total of 47 patients with PD (29 men; 18 women; mean age, 69.0 ± 7.6 (standard deviation, [SD]) years; range: 50.0-84.0 years) and 50 HC subjects (28 men; 22 women; mean age, 70.1 ± 6.2 [SD] years; range: 50.0-93.0 years) were included. Relative to the uncorrected-zCBF map, the corrected-zCBF map further refined the distributed brain regions in the PD group versus the HC group, manifested as the extension of motor-related regions (PFWE < 0.001). Compared to the HC subjects, patients with PD had elevated zATT and zCBV in the right putamen, a shortened zATT in the superior frontal gyrus, and specific zCBV variations in the left precuneus and the right supplementary motor area (PFWE < 0.001). The corrected-zCBF (AUC, 0.90; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.84-0.96) showed better classification performance than uncorrected-zCBF (AUC, 0.84; 95% CI: 0.75-0.92) (P = 0.035). zCBV achieved an AUC of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.82-0.96) and zATT achieved an AUC of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.55-0.77). The integration model of hemodynamic features from MDASL provided improved performance (AUC, 0.97; 95% CI: 0.95-0.98) for the diagnosis of PD by comparison with each perfusion model (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: ASL identifies impaired hemodynamics in patients with PD including regional abnormalities of CBF, CBV and ATT, which can better be mapped with MDASL compared to SDASL. These findings provide complementary depictions of perfusion abnormalities in patients with PD and highlight the clinical feasibility of MDASL.

Cuticular waxes play important roles in plant development and the interaction between plants and their environment. Researches on wax biosynthetic pathways have been reported in several plant species. Also, wax formation is closely related to environmental condition. However, the regulatory mechanism between wax and environmental factors, especially essential mineral elements, is less studied. Here we found that nitrogen (N) played a negative role in the regulation of wax synthesis in apple. We therefore analysed wax content, composition and crystals in BTB-TAZ domain protein 2 (MdBT2) overexpressing and antisense transgenic apple seedlings and found that MdBT2 could downregulate wax biosynthesis. Furthermore, R2R3-MYB transcription factor 16-like protein (MdMYB106) interacted with MdBT2, and MdBT2 mediated its ubiquitination and degradation through the 26S proteasome pathway. Finally, HXXXD-type acyl-transferase ECERIFERUM 2-like1 (MdCER2L1) was confirmed as a downstream target gene of MdMYB106. Our findings reveal an N-mediated apple wax biosynthesis pathway and lay a foundation for further study of the environmental factors associated with wax regulatory networks in apple.

Highly sensitive and facile detection of low levels of protein markers is of great significance for the early diagnosis and efficacy monitoring of diseases. Herein, aided by an efficient tyramine-signal amplification (TSA) mechanism, we wish to report a simple but ultrasensitive immunoassay with signal readout on a portable personal glucose meter (PGM). In this study, the bioconjugates of tyramine and invertase (Tyr-inv), which act as the critical bridge to convert and amplify the protein concentration information into glucose, are prepared following a click chemistry reaction. Then, in the presence of a target protein, the sandwich immunoreaction between the immobilized capture antibody, the target protein, and the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated detection antibody is specifically performed in a 96-well microplate. Subsequently, the specifically loaded HRP-conjugated detection antibodies will catalyze the amplified deposition of a large number of Tyr-inv molecules onto adjacent proteins through highly efficient TSA. Then, the deposited invertase, whose dosage can faithfully reflect the original concentration of the target protein, can efficiently convert sucrose to glucose. The amount of finally produced glucose is simply quantified by the PGM, realizing the highly sensitive detection of trace protein markers such as the carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha fetoprotein antigen at the fg/mL level. This method is simple, cost-effective, and ultrasensitive without the requirement of sophisticated instruments or specialized laboratory equipment, which may provide a universal and promising technology for highly sensitive immunoassay for in vitro diagnosis of diseases.

Introduction: Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) is a pathogen causing bovine mastitis that results in considerable economic losses in the livestock sector. To understand the distribution and drug resistance characteristics of S. agalactiae from dairy cow mastitis cases in China, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was carried out and the serotypes and drug resistance characteristics of the bacteria in the region were analysed. Material and Methods: A total of 21 strains of bovine S. agalactiae were characterised based on MLST, molecular serotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and the presence of drug resistance genes. Results: The serotypes were mainly Ia and II, accounting for 47.6% and 42.9% of all serotypes, respectively. Five sequence types (STs) were identified through MLST. The ST103 and ST1878 strains were predominant, with rates of 52.4% and 28.6%, respectively. The latter is a novel, previously uncharacterised sequence type. More than 90% of S. agalactiae strains were susceptible to penicillin, oxacillin, cephalothin, ceftiofur, gentamicin, florfenicol and sulfamethoxazole. The bacteria showed high resistance to tetracycline (85.7%), clindamycin (52.1%) and erythromycin (47.6%). Resistant genes were detected by PCR, the result of which showed that 47.6%, 33.3% and 38.1% of isolates carried the tet(M), tet(O) and erm(B) genes, respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that S. agalactiae show a high level of antimicrobial resistance. It is necessary to monitor the pathogens of mastitis to prevent the transmission of these bacteria.

Zhalajiao, a traditional Chinese fermented food, is popular due to its unique flavor. Traditional Zhalajiao fermentation is closely related to flavor compounds production. However, the mechanisms underlying the formation of these crucial flavor components in Zhalajiao remain unclear. Here, we explored the dynamic changes in physical and chemical properties, microbial diversity, and flavor components of Zhalajiao at various fermentation times. In total, 6 organic acids, 17 amino acids, and 21 key volatile compounds were determined as flavor components. In Zhalajiao, Lactobacillus and Cyanobacterium were the main bacteria that were involved in the formation of crucial flavor compounds. Candida showed a significant correlation with 14 key flavor compounds during fermentation (p < 0.05) and was the main fungal genus associated with flavor formation in Zhalajiao. This research offers a theoretical foundation for the flavor regulation and quality assurance of Zhalajiao.

Background: Escin is the main active component in Aesculus hippocastanum. It has been demonstrated that escin has anti-inflammatory properties. This study combined the methods of network pharmacology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics to explore the molecular mechanism of escin against neuropathic pain (NP). Methods: The Swiss Target Prediction and the Pharm Mapper database were employed for predicting the targets of escin. Also, the candidate targets of NP were gathered via the databases including Therapeutic Targets, DisGeNet, GeneCards, DrugBank, and OMIM. Subsequently, the network of protein-protein interaction was screened for the key targets by the software Cytoscape 3.8.0. Then, the intersection of these targets was analysed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment. Additionally, we further investigated the ligand-target interactions by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Results: In total, 94 escin targets were predicted by network pharmacology. Among them, SRC, MMP9, PTGS2, and MAPK1 were the core candidate targets. Subsequently, the analysis of GO and KEGG enrichment revealed that escin affected NP by regulating protein kinase C, MAP kinase, TRP channels, the T-cell receptors signaling pathway, and the TNF signaling pathway. The results of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation confirmed that escin not only had a strong binding activity with the four core target proteins but also stably combined in 50 ns. Conclusions: Our study revealed that escin acts on the core targets SRC, MMP9, PTGS2, MAPK1, and associated enrichment pathways to alleviate neuronal inflammation and regulate the immune response, thus exerting anti-NP efficacy. This study provided innovative ideas and methods for the promising treatment of escin in relieving NP.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) constitutes the most prevalent histopathologic subtype of renal cell carcinoma. The interplay between aging and cancer is complicated, and we provide a relatively new set of senescence genes that has not yet been used in the study of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Our objective is to investigate the involvement of senescence in the development and diagnosis of ccRCC. RNA-seq and clinical data for ccRCC was obtained from the cancer genome atlas and gene expression omnibus databases. Consensus clustering analysis was performed to identify novel molecular subgroups. Tumor immune status was assessed using estimating stromal and immune cells in malignancy using expression data, microenvironment cell populations, and single-sample gene set enrichment analysis analyses. Functional analysis, including gene ontology, gene set variation analysis, and gene set enrichment analysis, was conducted to explore potential mechanisms. A prognostic risk model was constructed using the LASSO algorithm and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Decision trees and nomograms were developed for survival prediction. SenMayo classified ccRCC patients into 2 molecular subtypes with significantly different survival rates, and significant differences in their immune status, characterized by poor prognosis with relatively high immune status. Besides, the differentially expressed genes between the 2 subgroups were mainly enriched in immune-related pathways. The burden of aging tissues and cells may lead to immune dysregulation and drug resistance, which could contribute to poor prognosis in ccRCC patients. Risk models, decision trees, and nomogram for ccRCC survival prediction have great potential applications. In conclusion, our study establishes a clear association between aging in ccRCC and the immune microenvironment, demonstrating the predictive potential of senescence genes for ccRCC prognosis.

Objectives: The potential role of shear wave elastography (SWE) and superb microvascular imaging (SMI) for early assessment of treatment response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer remains unexplored. This study aimed to identify potential factors associated with the pathological response to NAC using these advanced ultrasound techniques. Methods: Between August 2021 and October 2022, 68 patients with breast cancer undergoing NAC were recruited. Patients underwent conventional ultrasonography, SMI, and SWE examinations at baseline and post-2nd cycle of NAC. Maximum tumor diameter (Dmax), maximum elastic value (Emax), peak systolic velocity (PSV), and resistance index (RI) at baseline and the rate of change of these parameters post-2nd cycle were recorded. After chemotherapy, all patients underwent surgery. Using the Miller-Payne's grade, patients were categorized into response (grades 3, 4, or 5) and non-response (grades 1 or 2) group. Parameters were compared using t-tests at baseline and post-2nd cycle. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify variables and their odds ratios (ORs) related to responses and a prediction model was established. ROC curves were drawn to analyze the efficacy of each parameter and their combined model for early NAC response prediction. Results: Among the 68 patients, 15(22.06%) were categorized into the non-response group, whereas 53(77.94%) were categorized into the response group. At baseline, no significant differences were observed between the two groups (p>0.05). Post-2nd cycle of NAC, rates of change of Emax, PSV and RI (ΔEmax, ΔPSV and ΔRI) were higher in responders than non-responders (p<0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that ΔEmax (OR 0.797 95% CI, 0.683-0.929), ΔPSV (OR 0.926, 95%CI, 0.860-0.998), and ΔRI (OR 0.841, 95%CI, 0.736-0.960) were independently associated with the pathological response of breast cancer after NAC. The combined prediction model exhibited higher accuracy in the early evaluation of the response to NAC (AUC 0.945, 95%CI, 0.873-1.000). Conclusion: SWE and SMI techniques enable early identification of tumor characteristics associated with the pathological response to NAC and may be potentially indicative of an effective response. These factors may eventually be used for the early assessment of NAC treatment for clinical management.

Objective: The physiological process of wound healing is dynamic, continuous, and intricate. Nowadays, full-thickness burn wounds are treated by autologous skin transplantation. Unfortunately, when substantial burns develop, there are fewer donor sites accessible, making it difficult to satisfy the requirement for large-scale skin transplants and increasing the risk of patient mortality. This study investigated the possibility of using a newly created hypoimmunogenic epidermal cell sheet to heal skin wounds. Methods: Transfection with lentivirus was used to generate Keratinocytes (KCs) that overexpress Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase (IDO). Western blotting and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to measure IDO levels. To evaluate the function of IDO+ keratinocytes, CCK-8 and Transwell assays were performed. In cell sheet induction media, KCs and Fibroblasts (FBs) were cultured to yield epidermal cell sheets. The full-thickness skin excisions of BALB/c mice were transplanted with epidermal cell sheets. To assess the tumorigenicity of IDO+ keratinocytes, BALB/c nude mouse xenograft models were also used. CD3 and CD31 immunofluorescence labeling of wound tissue on day 12 to identify T lymphocyte infiltration and capillary development. ELISA measurement of IL-1 and TNF-α concentrations. Results: IDO + keratinocytes dramatically enhanced the expression levels of IDO mRNA and protein, as well as the amount of kynurenine in the conditioned media of IDO+ keratinocytes, compared to the Control and NC groups. CD8+ T cell apoptosis was considerably greater in the IDO group than in the Control and NC groups. Nevertheless, the proliferation and migratory capabilities of IDO+ keratinocytes were not substantially different from those of the Control and NC groups. In vitro cultivation of the hypoimmunogenic epidermal cell sheet was effective. In vivo transplantation experiments demonstrated that IDO+ epidermal cell sheets can effectively promote wound healing without tumorigenicity, and IDO+ epidermal cell sheets may promote wound healing by decreasing the expression levels of inflammatory factors (TNF and IL-1) in wound tissue, decreasing CD3+ T lymphocytes, and increasing infiltration and new capillaries in wound tissue. Conclusion: In this study, we successfully constructed the hypoimmunogenic epidermal cell sheet and demonstrated that the hypoimmunogenic epidermal cell sheet could accelerate wound healing.

BACKGROUND: The traditional Sichuan Sun-dried vinegar (SSV) with unique flavor and taste is believed to be generated by the solid-state fermentation craft. However, how microorganisms and their metabolites change along with fermentation has not yet been explored. RESULTS: In this study, our results demonstrated that the middle and late stages of SSV fermentation were the periods showing the largest accumulation of organic acids and amino acids. Furthermore, in the bacterial community, the highest average relative abundance was Lactobacillus (ranging from 37.55 to 92.50%) in all fermentation stages, while Acetobacters ranked second position (ranging from 20.15 to 0.55%). The number of culturable lactic acid bacteria is also increased during fermentation process (ranging from 3.93 to 8.31 CFU/g). In fungal community, Alternaria (29.42%), Issatchenkia (37.56%) and Zygosaccharomyces (69.24%) were most abundant in different fermentation stages, respectively. Interestingly, Zygosaccharomyces, Schwanniomyces and Issatchenkia were first noticed as the dominant yeast genera in vinegar fermentation process. Additionally, spearman correlation coefficients exhibited that Lactobacillus, Zygosaccharomyces and Schwanniomyces were significant correlation with most metabolites during the fermentation, implying that these microorganisms might make a significant contribution to the flavor formation of SSV. CONCLUSION: The unique flavor of SSV is mainly produced by the core microorganisms (Lactobacillus, Zygosaccharomyces and Schwanniomyces) during fermentation. This study will provide detailed information related to the structure of microorganism and correlation between changes in metabolites and microbial succession in SSV. And it will be very helpful for proposing a potential approach to monitor the traditional fermentation process.

Nutrition and health knowledge (NHK) is linked to people's dietary behavior and health outcomes. However, studies on the associations between NHK and chronic diseases are limited. This study aimed to examine the association of NHK with five specific chronic diseases (diabetes/hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke) in central China. Individual NHK and disease status were investigated using a self-reporting questionnaire. We further added up the number of chronic diseases and used this as a secondary outcome. A total of 21,559 adults were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. NHK score was significantly inversely associated with diabetes/hyperglycemia, hypertension, CHD, and stroke (all p-trends < 0.001). Moreover, an inverse association was found between NHK and the number of chronic diseases, especially among responders with three or more chronic diseases. Stratified analyses showed that the above association was more likely to be stronger among younger, female, highly educated, and inner-city residents. However, NHK was negatively associated with dyslipidemia in less educated people and positively correlated with dyslipidemia in highly educated people. NHK showed an inverse relationship with specific chronic diseases and the number of chronic diseases. Improving NHK might be a key strategy for easing the global burden of chronic diseases.

Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) orchestrates the production of proinflammatory cytokines in response to cytosolic double-stranded DNA; however, the pathophysiological significance and molecular mechanism underlying the folding and maturation of nascent STING protein at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) remain unknown. Here we report that the SEL1L-HRD1 protein complex-the most conserved branch of ER-associated degradation (ERAD)-is a negative regulator of the STING innate immunity by ubiquitinating and targeting nascent STING protein for proteasomal degradation in the basal state. SEL1L or HRD1 deficiency in macrophages specifically amplifies STING signalling and immunity against viral infection and tumour growth. Mechanistically, nascent STING protein is a bona fide substrate of SEL1L-HRD1 in the basal state, uncoupled from ER stress or its sensor inositol-requiring enzyme 1α. Hence, our study not only establishes a key role of SEL1L-HRD1 ERAD in innate immunity by limiting the size of the activable STING pool, but identifies a regulatory mechanism and therapeutic approach to targeting STING.

Our previous study has exhibited that one kind of Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed oil (ZSO), extracted from Zanthoxylum bungeanum seed, had inhibitory effects on osteoclastogenesis. However, the anti-osteoclastogenesis activities of different kinds of ZSO are scarcely reported. Since inflammation is related to bone loss and osteoporosis, in this study, three kinds of ZSO, Zanthoxylum schinifolium Siebold et Zucc seed oil (ZSSO), Zanthoxylum armatum DC. seed oil (ZDSO) and Zanthoxylum bungeanum maximum seed oil (ZBSO), were obtained with Soxhlet extraction and their fatty acid constituents were detected by GC-FID. RAW264.7 macrophages induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were used to evaluate the inhibitory effects of three kinds of ZSO on inflammation via detecting the expression levels of inflammatory factors by RT-qPCR. Moreover, RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis was applied to demonstrate the anti-osteoclastogenesis activities of them through tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and RT-qPCR. The GC-FID results exhibited that the highest constituent in ZSSO and ZDSO was oleic acid (OA) and palmitoleic acid (PLA), respectively. While linoleic acid (LA) and α-Linolenic acid (ALA) in ZBSO were dominant. At the concentration of 0.5 µL/mL, all three kinds of ZSO could decrease the expression levels of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) in LPS-induced macrophages. At the concentration of 0.25 µL/mL, only ZSSO could decrease the expression levels of iNOS and COX-2, which implied the inhibitory effects of ZSSO were stronger than other ZSOs. The number of RANKL-induced osteoclasts and the expressions of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), TNF-α and IL-6 in the cells were decreased after being treated with ZSOs at the concentration of 0.5 µL/mL, while the number of RANKL-induced osteoclasts after treated with ZBSO were less than those treated with other ZSOs, this indicated that the anti-osteoclastogenesis effect of ZBSO were stronger than other ZSOs. In conclusion, the fatty acid compositions of three major kinds of ZSO were compared and the content of unsaturated fatty acids especially ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in ZBSO were the highest among them. All ZSOs tested had anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoclastogenesis activities. And their anti-osteoclastogenesis effects might be related to the suppression of the NF-κB pathway.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have emphasized that selective resection of epileptic lesions in temoral lobe is associated with better preservation of cognition function; whether this applies to patients with refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) remains unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in cognitive functions, mood status, and quality of life after anterior temporal lobectomy in patients with refractory MTLE. METHODS: This single-arm cohort study assessed cognitive function, mood status, and quality of life, as well as electroencephalography findings, in patients with refractory MTLE who underwent anterior temporal lobectomy at Xuanwu Hospital from January 2018 to March 2019. Pre- and post-operative characteristics were compared to evaluate the effects of surgery. RESULTS: Anterior temporal lobectomy significantly reduced the frequencies of epileptiform discharges. The overall success rate of surgery was acceptable. Anterior temporal lobectomy did not result in significant changes in overall cognitive functions (P   >  0.05), although changes in certain domains, including visuospatial ability, executive ability, and abstract thinking, were detected. Anterior temporal lobectomy resulted in improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: Anterior temporal lobectomy reduced epileptiform discharges and incidence of post-operative seizures as well as resulted in improved mood status and quality of life without causing significant changes in cognitive function.

Fabrication errors inevitably occur in device manufacturing owing to the limited processing accuracy of commercial silicon photonic processes. For silicon photonic devices, which are mostly processing-sensitive, their performances usually deteriorate significantly. This remains an unsolved issue for mass production, particularly for passive devices, because they cannot be adjusted once fixed in processes. This study presents a post-processing trimming method to compensate for fabrication errors by changing the cladding equivalent refractive indices of devices with femtosecond lasers. The experimental results show that the resonant wavelengths of micro-ring resonators can be regularly shifted within their free spectral range via tuning the illuminating area, focusing position, emitting power, and scanning speed of the trimming femtosecond laser with an acceptable loss increase. These experiments, as well as the trimming experiments in improving the phase balance of Mach-Zehnder interferometer switches, indicate that the femtosecond laser trimming method is an effective and fast method for silicon photonic devices.

INTRODUCTION: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is currently considered to be a non-hereditary disease, which is relatively rare clinically. It is also known as polyposis hyperpigmentation alopecia nail dystrophy syndrome, it is a syndrome characterized by gastrointestinal polyposis and ectodermal changes, the main manifestations are gastrointestinal symptoms, skin pigmentation, alopecia, and hypothyroidism. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of a case of CCS admitted to Huanghe Sanmenxia Hospital were analyzed. In the course of treatment, traditional Chinese medicine was used, but no hormone, and the patient's clinical symptoms were greatly relieved. CONCLUSIONS: CCS is rare, there is no specific treatment, and traditional Chinese medicine may can greatly relieve the clinical symptoms of patients. However, it's still having to be verified by a large sample, multi-center, long-term treatment follow-up studies.

Objective@#To investigate the prevalence and relevant factors of eating out-of-home among middle school students in Wuhan, and to analyze its association with overweight/obesity, so as to provide scientific basis for the prevention of overweight/obesity among middle school students.@*Methods@#From March to April 2023, 1 654 middle school students in Wuhan were selected by convenient sampling method for a questionnaire survey. The multivariate Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relevant factors of eating out-of-home and to explore its relationship with overweight/obesity among middle school students.@*Results@#On weekdays, 57.19% of the middle school students ate out-of-home at least once a week. On weekends, 81.38% of the participants ate out-of-home at least once a week. The multivariate analysis showed non -resident students were more likely to eat out-of-home on weekdays (OR=4.32, 95%CI =2.10-8.90, P <0.05). Middle school students whose fathers with educational backgrounds of high school, technical secondary school or college above, and families with per capita monthly income levels of 2 000-5 000 and >5 000 yuan, and average monthly food expenses of 500-<1 000 and 1 000-<1 500 yuan were more likely to eat out-of-home on weekends ( OR= 2.12 , 2.77; 2.58, 3.32; 1.70, 1.98, P <0.05). Middle school students with qualified nutrition and health knowledge scores were more likely to eat out-of-home on weekends than those with excellent nutrition and health knowledge scores ( OR=1.51, 95%CI = 1.12 -2.06, P <0.05). Students who ate out-of-home once or twice per week on weekends had 1.50 times higher risk of overweight/obesity than those who ate out-of-home none per week on weekends (adjusted OR =1.50, 95% CI =1.05-2.15, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#Eating out-of-home is common among middle school students in Wuhan. Middle school students should actively cultivate awareness of healthy eating, and decrease the frequency of eating out-of-home to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity .

A prism-shaped cage was obtained via the Friedel-Crafts reaction in a 2:3 mixture of trisfuryl and bis-isopropenyl precursors, in a remarkable yield of 40% considering six C-C bonds formed in a one-pot manner. The cage contains two π-electron rich trisfuryl platforms bridged in a face-to-face manner with three p-xylylene linkers. Therefore, it enables accommodation of π-electron poor guests with complementary size, including biscationic viologen.

(1) Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (t-VNS) in the treatment of primary insomnia. (2) Methods: This is a single center, randomized, double-blind study. A total of 30 patients diagnosed with primary insomnia were randomly divided into two groups to receive 20 Hz t-VNS in either the auricular concha area (treatment group) or periauricular area (control group), twice a day for 20 min during a one-month study period. The effective rate of treatment, defined as a ≥50% reduction of the Pittsburgh Sleep Index Scale (PSQI) after treatment, was compared between the two groups as the primary outcome. Response rate (defined as ≥10% change in the PSQI score), and changes in the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) scores were also assessed. (3) Results: After one month of treatment, the PSQI score of the treatment group decreased significantly (p = 0.001). The effective rate of the treatment group (73% vs. 27%, p = 0.027) was significantly higher than that of the control group. No statistical differences in changes of HAMA and HAMD scores were detected between the two groups. There were no complications in all patients. (4) Conclusion: T-VNS appeared to be a safe and effective treatment for primary insomnia.
